Google’s mobile-friendly ranking algorithm  is  designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. The mobile-friendly algorithm is a page-by-page signal, so it can take time for Google to assess each page, and that may be why it will be a gradual rollout. And depending on how fast Google crawls and indexes all of the pages on your site, the impact can be slow to show up.

Well, here are some tips you can follow to optimize your site ranking on mobile devices.

Let’s start with the basic site framework set up for a mobile version of your site.

MOBILE SITE SET UP

 RESPONSIVE WEB DESIGN

Responsive means you will have the same code rendering different displays depending on the devices & screen size with the exact same URL & requires no redirection. You can use META  name= “viewport”   attribute & value to tell the browser how to adjust the content.

DYNAMIC SERVING

In a case of  Dynamic serving the server responds with a different code altogether depending on the User-Agent requesting the page.

SEPARATE URL’ s

Here,  each desktop URL has a separate mobile version of the URL

MOBILE SEO GUIDELINES

1.Don’t Block JS, CSS & Image Files

You should make sure GoogleBot can crawl  JS, fileCSS & Image files by using the          “Fetch As Google ” feature in Google Webmaster Tools.Check your site with Google Mobile-Friendly test & check that robots.txt is not blocking any of the files.

2.Avoid Unplayable Content

Use  HTML5 for animations . Use video-embedding playable on all devices & provides a transcript for the video.

3.Faulty Redirects & Cross-Links

Use  GWT[Google Webmaster Tools] to find the faulty URL’s to fix them & fix your server to point to the accurate mobile equivalent  URL of your desktop version.

4.Use Mobile Only 404 Page

If you don’t have a separate 404 for smartphones then keep your users to your desktop page rather than redirecting them   & if you use Dynamic serving ensure your agent detection is configured correctly.

5. Speed Up Your Loading Time

Test your site speed for both Desktop & Mobile using Google PageSpeed Insights.

6. Use Rel Attribute

<Link Rel=”Alternate” Media=”Only Screen and (Max -Width:640 px)   href=”m.ipssdigital.com/contact-us “/ >

Use this attribute on the desktop page to map the mobile version of the URL.

7. Use “Vary: User -Agent ” HTTP HEADER

This is necessary to be configured in the server whether the server redirects or shows different content according to the device.

8. Use “Rel=Canonical”

Use the desktop value for both the mobile & desktop version which prevents confusion about indexing duplicate contents.

9. Site Design For Mobile

  • Don’ t Use Flash
  • Design For The Fat Finger
  • Don’t Use Pop-Ups
  • Optimize Title & Meta Descriptions
  • Use Schema.org  For Rich Snippets
  • Optimize For Local Search
  • Mobile Sitemaps

Since the launch of first Mobile-Friendly update algorithm on April 2015 Google is giving a significant weight to sites which are optimized for mobile devices.  Google is  now indexing  mobile versions of a page  first with it’s Mobile-First index algorithms.

The mobile first index means that Google will consider mobile friendly websites first when deciding how to rank content. If your site has a mobile version or responsive design, Google might rank you based on how your website performs on mobile devices.
